Cajun Fiddle Playing Style and Sound

Cajun music is essentially dance music and this style of fiddle playing is all about bow rhythms that make you want to move. Melodically it is often based on the pentatonic scale with open strings dragged along with the melody notes to fill out the sound and add gumbo. Cajun fiddle bridges the gap between being a rhythm and a melodic instrument.

Cajun style music is emblematic of Louisiana. Even though it was born on the bajou it is actually rooted in the ballads of the French-speaking Acadians of Canada. Cajun music is often associated with the Creole-based and Cajun-influenced Zydeco, both styles also of Acadian origin. These French Louisiana sounds have influenced American popular music for many decades, especially country music.

Cajun Music is an aural tradition dating way back to the conquest of southwest Louisiana by the Acadians after their displacement from Nova Scotia, Canada. It shares influences and repertoire from the Quebec and Cape Breton Island traditions.

Defining characteristics of Cajun Fiddle:

  • Major penatonic frequently used for melody

  • Rhytmic bowing

  • Dragging adjacent open strings to fill out the sound

String Samples

String players intonate notes precisely while liberally applying vibrato which typically rolls below the intended pitch. This gives ensembles that lush chorus effect.

Celtic Fiddle

The defining characteristics of Celtic Fiddle are the rapid, rhythmic bow articulations and rolling note ornamentations on either side of the melody note.

Gypsy Violin

Gypsy Violin often uses harmonic minor or double harmonic minor Byzantine tonalities combined with wider emotive vibrato.

Country Fiddle

Country Fiddle is unique stylistically because the players often slide into the intended notes. Rhythmic sawing bow paterns give this style it’s characteristic propulsion.

Cajun Fiddle

Cajun music is dance music plain and simple. This style is all about bow rhythms and open notes are often dragged along with the melody notes to add gumbo.

Electric Violin

Electric Violinists often use digital and analog effects the same way electric guitarists would. Fretless violin gives the ultimate flexibility for bending into and out of notes.
